So-Called "Healthy Foods" That Can Make You Fat



Some so­-called "smart eats" are just junk food in disguise. Cut back on them, and you might just see the scale start to move again. Your thighs will certainly thank you.

Most of us know that certain foods and beverages like the Starbucks® Unicorn drink are loaded with fat and sugar. The drink is 401 calories, 16 grams of fat (10 grams saturated), 5 grams of protein, 62 grams of carbs (0 grams of fiber), and a whopping 59 grams of belly fattening sugar.

But it’s the foods we neglect to check that can be the reason our metabolism is slowing down to a screeching halt. Not to worry, the metabolism is more forgiving than you might think, and the first step is awareness of what works for weight loss and what doesn’t. Most of us think, “I'll only have few,” but when it comes to nuts, that tiny handful can add up to more calories than you think.

One ounce of nuts (6-10 small almonds) is at least 100 calories and 14 grams or more of fat. Each time you grab a handful, you're eating 100 calories a pop and 14 grams of fat, and your daily total is 20 grams of fat, maximum. 

So you can see that little handful is all it takes to go overboard with calories and fat, and that affects our weight loss. Yet, unless you journal every bite you take, you won’t know. If you bite it write it down! You'll soon see where your calories are coming from. My recommendation?  Grab a Lean Bar instead. You’ll get more nutrients, fiber, and you'll also be more satisfied.

The unsuspecting avocado. Yes, it’s a good-for-you fat, but all fats need to be limited because they are very high-calorie. Each gram of fat you eat has nine calories, and when we start eating avocados, we aren’t thinking, “what's a serving?” We just eat what's put in front of us, and that’s where the trouble starts.

The average woman eats a medium avocado that contains 322 calories and a whopping 29 grams of fat. That’s way over our daily 20-gram budget and BAM! That healthy food blocks weight loss again. 

A serving of avocado is one (1) tbsp., which is 94 calories. So if you opt to eat the avocado, skip the dressing, or your weight loss will suffer.

Remember my rule of thumb; when in doubt, don’t eat it. All you have to do is hit the Google bar and ask how much fat does a medium avocado have, and you'll quickly have your answer. You’ll get conflicting numbers, but you'll get an estimate, and it may stop you from messing up your weight loss plan.  

Imagine what would happen if you committed all four sins in one day. My advice? Stick to the Lose 1 Pound Per Day Plan until you reach your goal weight. Be religious about following it and check the food list provided before eating any foods. If you don’t see it on the list, it's not good for weight loss. It's just that simple.

        Outsmart Your Metabolism To Burn Fat Faster!


        Whether you’re trying to burn off stubborn body fat or shed a few pounds, you’ll need to know the fat loss facts first before you can successfully melt fat and lose weight.

        THE PROBLEM

        More than 100 million people in the U.S. have a metabolic issue known as Metabolic Syndrome, Syndrome X, or Insulin Resistance that’s STOPPING them from losing weight.

        ADD EXERCISE

        The Best Way to Lose Weight for That Big Event


        Prince William and Kate Middleton did it; cleansed in order to slim down before their wedding. Maybe you've got a big event coming up, like a wedding (yours or one you're attending), a class reunion, a vacation on the beach, or you just feel the need to jump-start your weight loss, and you need to drop some weight and shape up. Then this is specifically for you.

        I hear it regularly, “I need to lose some weight for …" And then it is followed by a big sigh before it is followed with, “how can I get there quick?”

        One Or More Months Before The Big Event

        Here are a few things you'll need to know to be well on your way to being slim, hard, and sexy for your future husband or wife, your old school mates, or that person you are trying to meet in paradise. Better yet, do it for you!

        Eliminate any liquid calories like soda or fancy coffee drinks and replace them with water recipes. It’s absolutely the easiest way to shed pounds and inches.

        Research shows that beverage calories tend not to be filling, and you may not think of drinks as food, but in 30 days time just one 20 oz. glass of cola, sweet tea or juice adds up to the equivalent of about 2,000 jelly beans worth of sugar.

        Stick with water (take a look at these delicious, hydrating water recipes) and unsweetened hot or cold green or black tea. And if you must have your morning cup of Joe, doctor it up with melt fat out milk and add spices like cinnamon and nutmeg; they help add flavor so you won’t miss the sugar and they're both antioxidant rich (think glowing skin).

        At dinner, make 50 percent of the bulk of your meals leafy green veggies (about 2 cups, the size of 2 baseballs), 3 oz. of white fish, preferably white fish. Include a small amount (1 tsp.) of a healthy plant-based fat, such as sautéing the veggies in 1 tsp. of sesame oil or extra virgin olive oil.

        This nutritional balance helps decrease blood sugar levels, which sets up the body to burn fat and helps to curbs calories and hunger. It also helps to energize as you shrink your fat cells.

        Make sure to measure your food. You may think your eyeballs are your biggest asset but don't use them to visualize your portions, get a food scale. 

        The Week Before The Big Event

        Get rid of the big bloaters/triggers: Alcohol, chewing gum, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners. Drinking through a straw, eating too fast, skipping meals, and over-blending your protein shakes (adding air) can also cause bloating. All of these make you swallow or retain more air in your GI tract, which can swell like a balloon, giving you a pooch which can show in your dress or clothes.

        On The Big Day
