Six Habits of a Happy, Healthy Mom


Healthy moms are not afraid to get help, and my mom agrees! As Sunday was Mother's Day, I wanted to share some tips from my favorite mom on how she remains a happy and healthy mom.

Protein Time

Nothing is more important than eating right, which means getting enough protein in their diet to nourish and protect their body, especially their bones. That’s why it’s a good idea for all moms to start their day off right with a delicious Complete Protein smoothie.

My mom's favorite smoothie recipe is the Chocolate Shake with water and ice, and get it real frothy. While chocolate may be her favorite, she likes variety and rotates between the shake flavors. Here's her simple recipe:

(2 scoops) LynFit Complete Protein Powder
(¾ cup) Water
Handful of ice
(3-4) Frozen strawberries (mom lives alone and doesn't shop much so keeping frozen strawberries in the house is a must)

Blend together and enjoy!

Snack Time

Movement Time

But, that IT WILL get better.

My mom is a firm believer in finding humor in everything and going out of her way to find a good belly laugh. You know the kind—the "pee in your pants" belly laugh! She'll even do something silly if that's what it takes. If nothing else, it makes us laugh at her ridiculousness. After all, for a mom, being able to share a laugh with your kids is priceless!

So, from my mom to all you moms: Get plenty of the right kind of protein, make sure your snacks are healthy, get up and move, give your body the proper nourishment, get plenty of sleep so your body can recover, and above all else, it's okay to pee your pants laugh from time to time  :)

Most of us think, “I'll only have few,” but when it comes to nuts, that tiny handful can add up to more calories than you think.

One ounce of nuts (6-10 small almonds) is at least 100 calories and 14 grams or more of fat. Each time you grab a handful, you're eating 100 calories a pop and 14 grams of fat, and your daily total is 20 grams of fat, maximum. 

So you can see that little handful is all it takes to go overboard with calories and fat, and that affects our weight loss. Yet, unless you journal every bite you take, you won’t know. If you bite it write it down! You'll soon see where your calories are coming from. My recommendation?  Grab a Lean Bar instead. You’ll get more nutrients, fiber, and you'll also be more satisfied.

FOOD SIN #4

The unsuspecting avocado. Yes, it’s a good-for-you fat, but all fats need to be limited because they are very high-calorie. Each gram of fat you eat has nine calories, and when we start eating avocados, we aren’t thinking, “what's a serving?” We just eat what's put in front of us, and that’s where the trouble starts.

The average woman eats a medium avocado that contains 322 calories and a whopping 29 grams of fat. That’s way over our daily 20-gram budget and BAM! That healthy food blocks weight loss again. 

A serving of avocado is one (1) tbsp., which is 94 calories. So if you opt to eat the avocado, skip the dressing, or your weight loss will suffer.

Remember my rule of thumb; when in doubt, don’t eat it. All you have to do is hit the Google bar and ask how much fat does a medium avocado have, and you'll quickly have your answer. You’ll get conflicting numbers, but you'll get an estimate, and it may stop you from messing up your weight loss plan.  

Imagine what would happen if you committed all four sins in one day. My advice? Stick to the Lose 1 Pound Per Day Plan until you reach your goal weight. Be religious about following it and check the food list provided before eating any foods. If you don’t see it on the list, it's not good for weight loss. It's just that simple.

Following a plan like the Lose 1 Pound Per Day Plan works better than any other diet you'll ever try because there is no thinking, planning, or counting calories, which make losing weight faster and easier, leaving you more time to live your life. It's also the most nourishing and healthy for your body. And with health, anything is possible!

Leaner, Stronger, Healthier Moms

Being a mom means caring for others, which usually means we either miss meals or end up grabbing what's handy and eating the wrong things and neglect our health.

Moms need to make their health the number one priority in order to effectively take care of everyone else and set a good example for their kids.         (½-1 cup) Pineapple, canned or frozen is fine
        (6-8) Ice cubes
        *Want more coconut flavor? Add ½ tsp. coconut extract.

        Delicious shake tips that won't add tons of calories:

          • For a thicker shake, use less water and more ice
          • For a thinner shake, use more water and less ice
          • Need it sweeter? Add Stevia or Splenda
          • Need more chocolatey taste? Add 1 tsp., or as desired, of unsweetened cocoa powder
          • Try very low-calorie, sugar-free coconut water or almond milk
          • Adding a little jello adds tons of flavor without extra calories!

        'Tis the season of overdoing it, and that usually means we end up getting sick. We seem to be exhausted all the time, and that almost always means we gain weight.

        Getting Back On Track With Your Weight Loss



        When it comes to weight loss, "tomorrow" is the most dangerous word in the English language. If you're serious about losing weight, and not seeing the results you'd like, it's time to stop living the way you've been living. The price you pay is very high for the cheap thrill that food gives you. In the end, it might even cost you your health. How you're living today directly affects your tomorrow. So, what will you do differently?

        I receive emails seeking advice, all too often, from people with a habit of doing a week or two of strict, metabolic boosting eating and then falling off the weight loss wagon into a pile of cookies or store-bought protein bars. They want to know what they can do to stick to the plan, or should they even try. The first thing I tell them is the reason most people fall is that they think they need to be perfect with their eating. It's important to understand that perfection does not exist. 

        Most of us fall because we become too legalistic about our diets. Rather, our diets should be treated as a habit of making better choices, requiring us to decide what our actions will be. This makes us responsible for our actions, and the outcomes.

        You know the old saying; "If you keep doing what you've always done you'll just keep getting the same results. To expect anything different is the very definition of insanity." Quite honestly, there is a lot of insanity surrounding the foods that will keep you from reaching your goals. 

        Have you ever told yourself; "I'll just have a little"? Sorry to say it, but that little bit is what's stopping you from reaching your goals. 

        It's at these very times to remind yourself that perfection does not exist. Focus on daily progress, not daily perfection. You have more control than you think when it comes to making food choices. But if you keep falling off the wagon, it's possible you may need a few tools to help keep you on track.

          Here's what the 80/20 plan get you: Acceptance! You learn to accept things you cannot change. You're no longer fighting a battle you most likely cannot win. 

          I can't think of anything harder or more stressful than struggling with food. I've struggled with it my entire life until I learned about the 80/20 rule. 

          You can live guilt-free. Guilt about eating junk food can actually cause you to gain weight and depress your immune system. By making a plan to "go off" for a meal as an occasional (1–2 times weekly) deviation from your regular schedule, rather than betraying your body, you remove the guilt. Make a plan, if you plan on losing.

          I would encourage you to read this article I wrote previously about how to cheat and still lose weight to keep your metabolism in full swing, and how if you don't, it can alter the physiological effect it has on you. 

          As Kelly Clarkson says in her song: "Think Before You Cheat" so you don't hurt your health or destroy a month's worth of dieting. Most of the time it's not worth it anyway. 

          So, eat happily, just don't' forget to boost first!

            Janine

            This is Janine — Janine is a 50-year old busy mom of two. She lost 90 pounds, but more importantly, she became symptom-free of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Prior to losing weight, in addition to the RA, Janine struggled with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression, sleep apnea, edema, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction, sciatica, osteopenia, and peripheral neuropathy. While never diagnosed as a diabetic, it was only a matter of time.

            On 10/15/13, her doctor wrote "STOPPED" next to ten drugs she was taking for the above conditions, and "STOPPED" on all narcotic combinations for the above. She is now in her second year of remission from all.

            Brianna

            And, this is Brianna — Brianna's story is opposite from most of our weight loss stories. She needed to muscle up and keep fat from being stored. Brianna needed to gain 30 pounds of lean muscle. We accomplished this by increasing her diet, and changing it to a thermogenic "low-low" (low fat and low carb) while changing her to metabolic, fat blasting workouts. She immediately began seeing results, resulting in her being very consistent. Like I said at the beginning—fast results create an excitement to continue.

            Brianna worked out three times weekly for 30 minutes each. She used the Lean Core Workout and Recovery Stretch on her off days to help ease depression symptoms. She walked 2–3 times weekly, or whenever time allowed.
