The Great Diet Debate
The only topic that’s debated more than the current presidential election is weight loss and workouts. It seems everyone has something to say on these topics. Despite there being a diet for every minute of the day and a new workout popping up by the second, Americans are gaining weight and becoming less fit. Have you ever wondered which diet provides the best weight loss, and do they all help you burn off fat?
Most of us get overwhelmed at the mere thought of which one to pick. From Paleo to Pilates, there is misleading information, all of which stops us from losing weight and getting into shape. All the while increasing our stress levels and sending us into a downward spiral, which is never productive when it comes to making the decision to improve our health. How are we supposed to sort through all of this misinformation so we can lose weight and get into shape?
Keep It Simple And Stick To Science
I've been where you are, so I know firsthand how depressing it feels to try every workout and diet you read about, only to end up gaining weight, leaving you feeling even more hopeless after starving yourself and practically living in the gym. I over-exercised, lived in the gym, drank vegan shakes non-stop, yet was 40 pounds overweight.
My 360° turnaround occurred when I worked at the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) as an apprentice alongside Dr. Fred Hatfield. Dr. Hatfield was doing research to test bodybuilding programs that included diet, exercise, and supplements to see what did and didn't work.
The results were shocking. Most of what I was doing to try to lose weight was all wrong. I worked out way too hard ,and for too long (a CrossFit kind of workout) — yes, that’s possible, and I ate too much healthy food — yes, that's possible as well.
The Top Mistakes I Made
I drank the wrong kind of protein shakes (I used to drink vegan), and like any gym rat, I drank a lot of them. I didn't realize that it wasn’t the right kind of protein for losing weight and boosting my sluggish metabolism. Besides, they tasted disgusting.
Vegan shakes are not a complete protein, meaning they lack the essential amino acids to be called complete and therefore will not have the metabolic boosting benefits of a high-quality Complete Whey Protein.
I lived on cereal bars. Like most moms, I need portable good-for-you food that I can eat on-the-go. What I didn’t realize was how little protein these tiny little bars contained, or how many carbohydrates and sugars they were filled with. To make a long story short, my health habits were killing my weight loss.
Combined with working out too long and too hard, I was ravenously hungry which sent me straight to my health halo foods. They only served to jack-up my sugar and stop my weight loss. In the end, it was an all day struggle with food.
I had my aha moment of what I was doing and got where I was when I was 40 pounds overweight (that’s a lot on my little frame). I needed to start doing things differently if I wanted to transform my body. This was how the Metabolic Boosting Weight Loss System was created. Collaboration With Dr. Hatfield
Everything I thought I knew about weight loss was all wrong. As I mentioned earlier, I learned that while working alongside Dr. Hatfield.

Aim for at least one gram per pound of lean body weight per day. Example: If you weigh 150 pounds, but you have 25 pounds of fat, your lean body weight would be 125 pounds. Your goal is to consume 125 grams of lean protein every day. However, you can’t eat it all at once if you’re trying to lose weight and melt fat. When it comes to losing weight, it can be next to impossible to find foods that can help keep you on track. There are a few miracle foods however that are purported to be negative in calories. These foods essentially contain more water than they do calories and require more calories to utilize them than they hold. Thus, making these foods essentially calorie-free.
Approximately 75 percent of a celery stick is water. The other 25 percent is fiber and other roughage. As a result, this tasty vegetable provides you with far fewer calories than it will take for your body to digest it. In addition to burning more calories than it contains, celery is an excellent source of fiber that can help to keep you feeling fuller for longer, helping you to reduce the urge to snack.
The health benefits of celery don’t end at weight loss. Celery is full of nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K. Here's my example — I needed to stop working out compulsively and learn to feel my feelings instead of turn to food. There I said it; it's not so bad. In fact, it feels good to say it. I also needed to choose the right kinds of food that cause weight loss vs. weight gain.
- Find replacements for your not-so-healthy habits and define your new healthier habits. Write them down now. Then, imagine how much better you'll feel. List all the benefits and rewards of adopting these habits to help inspire change.
Here's my example — I needed a new doable workout that worked for weight loss that didn’t overwork me and jack up my appetite. I needed to grab and apple or a real protein bar that was lower in carbs and sugar instead of handfuls of trail mix or cereal bars that worked against me. I will feel better and learn to like myself more, and I won’t need to overwork in the gym because I’m eating better.
- Create your Weight Loss Action Plan, starting with just one habit (no more than three) that you really want to implement. Write them down now.
Here's my example — I will work out on an empty stomach for 30 minutes every day before work. I will drink my shake without adding extra calories (no fruit or almond milk), and take my supplements after I work out. I will drink my coffee black from now on. This was simple and doable, and the rest is history!

What can Donald Trump, Steve Jobs, and Mark Cuban teach you about reaching your weight loss goals?
Rule #1: Success requires 100 percent commitment, no matter what it is you’re trying to accomplish in life. Sounds so easy, doesn’t it? But, commitment is not for everyone. Especially when it comes to losing weight. It's a necessary requirement, however, if you're serious about lasting change.
Being 100 percent committed makes losing weight easier because you’re not always fighting with that two percent of yourself that’s not all in. For example, you have one of those crazy, busy days, and your emotions are all over the place—all you have to eat in your refrigerator is not the best choice for your weight loss—if you're 100 percent committed to your lifestyle change you pause for a moment and remind yourself what your goal is. You then decide what to eat based on what you are 100 percent committed to achieving.
If you are not all in, and five percent of you isn't on board, you will allow yourself to make another excuse to eat what you want. This is exactly the type of behavior that has gotten you where you are, so if you're serious about change, follow what the Donald Trump's, Steve Jobs', and Mark Cuban's of the world would do; commit to your goals 100 percent and see what happens. You’ll never miss a workout again or let food control you into thinking you had no other choice but to eat it.
Remember, you always have a choice, and you have more control than you think. Commit to your weight loss and fitness goals and be all in 100 percent, all the time. Watch how easily your weight loss becomes. If you're still struggling, you might want to ask yourself why you’re resisting change.
I'm going to tell you a secret; I don’t always want to work out or eat clean all the time. Even though I am extremely passionate about health and fitness, I’m only human. Sometimes I just don't feel like working out or eating clean. When my humanness kicks in, I start making excuses.
I immediately tell myself that eating healthy and moving my body is not negotiable. I haven’t missed a workout in over 30 years since I began thinking this way.
I also learned to focus on progress, not perfection. This thought process makes it easier for me to get back up if and when I fall (we all fall). Boost Your Thyroid to Boost Your Weight Loss
If your metabolism is a revved engine, thyroid hormone is the gas. But when you have hypothyroidism, or your thyroid has begun to slow down (which is inevitable as we age), your thyroid gland doesn’t make enough of the hormone. A slower metabolism can make it hard to lose weight, but it has other negative effects as well, such as fatigue and weakness. Here's how to get a metabolism boost when hypothyroidism is slowing it down.
Hypothyroidism and Metabolism: What’s the Connection?
Thyroid hormone isn’t the only component involved in metabolism, but thyroid hormone is essential and is needed to run nearly every organ system in the body.
More often, problems with losing weight have to do with fluid buildup, which can happen when a slower metabolism causes a slower heart rate.
Other symptoms of hypothyroidism may include fatigue, sleepiness, weak muscles, constipation, feeling cold, cognitive problems, dry skin, a hoarse voice, lower appetite, joint pain, and menstrual changes.
According to the Canadian Thyroid Association, an estimated 200 million people in the world have some type/form of thyroid disease, and more than 20 million Americans have a thyroid disorder, with less than half being properly diagnosed.
This certainly was my story, and I struggled for years with depression and weight gain. With the debilitating fatigue, I was always getting sick, yet my doctors couldn't agree on the proper way to treat it or if they should treat it all, despite my suffering.
The more I learn about the thyroid, the more I realize we need to be in touch with our body and keep them nourished and healthy—especially our thyroid function. Sadly, doctors don't take it seriously enough, despite the fact that the thyroid gland controls every organ function, specifically our metabolism.
As we age, it's inevitable that our thyroid function will decline. It will also decline when we decrease calories and try to lose weight. Thyroid hormones also directly affect heart rate, cholesterol levels, muscle contractions and relaxation, skin and hair growth, mood, and memory (brain fog). What I find the most annoying is the upset to the digestive system, also known as constipation, that can cause us to get stuck in a weight gain rut.
Weight gain, difficulty losing weight, and fatigue are the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism. As you can see, they certainly aren't the only ones.
An underactive thyroid can also severely affect your health, and it's going undetected. Some endocrinologists will go so far to say they think the blood test for low thyroid function are a waste of time, leaving you to rely on knowing your body and to be able to recognize when it's not functioning properly.
In this article, I'm going to help you understand why you need to boost your thyroid, even if you've never struggled with thyroid issues before. At some point, as you age, you will be dealing with a sluggish thyroid.
Bottom line — without enough thyroid hormone, which is produced by keeping your thyroid well-nourished and healthy, every system in your body slows down. You'll feel tired and sleep a lot but never feel recovered. Weight gain almost always occurs, which is why most people end up at their doctors for treatment. Without enough thyroid hormone, attaining your ideal weight and melting body fat is practically impossible.
How is hypothyroidism diagnosed?
An optimal TSH level should be less than 4.0, not the currently accepted 4.7 rebooted by most labs—which is why most good endocrinologists believe the blood test for this is a waste of time and money.
Free T3 and Free T4 should be the middle of your lab's reference range, and your thyroid antibodies should be negative.
I always suggest that my clients get copies of all lab reports and carefully read them over to stay on top of findings your doctor could easily miss, or dismiss because they don't feel it's worthy. If you don't feel well, speak up until you get your needs met. Frankly, I suggest finding another doctor who will listen to you. It's not just your weight loss that will suffer—your health depends on it.
What symptoms should you pay attention to?
Thyroid symptoms vary greatly and not all individuals will show the same signs. If you are experiencing two or more of the following symptoms, you should consult your doctor and begin to nourish/boost your thyroid right away.
- Unexplained weight gain or inability to lose weight
- Constipation / digestive issues
- Food intolerances
- Frequently feeling cold despite the room temperature or intolerance to cold
- Dry skin
- Brittle hair
- Splitting nails
- Hair loss
- Irregular menses or heavy menstrual bleeding
- Poor memory
- Decreased sex drive/libido
These symptoms are not the worst part of a hypothyroidism diagnosis. It doesn't end once you begin treatment. I spend 10 hours or more weekly studying thyroid issues and seeking alternative ideas. I turn over every rock, searching global ideas, vs. one-trick pony methods. Here is what I've found.
The thyroid gland needs very specific nourishment to stay healthy and function optimally. It requires outside help by taking supplements daily, such as LynFit Thyro-Boost. - Nutritional deficiencies may also prevent proper manufacturing or functioning of the thyroid hormones in the body. For example, iodine (found in seafood and iodized salt, but not sea salt), zinc, tyrosine, and selenium are necessary for optimal function of the thyroid.
- Not getting enough sleep can change your metabolism, according to the National Sleep Foundation, which recommends that most adults get about seven to nine hours of sleep a night. - Consuming foods that contain gluten. WARNING—it's lurking in a lot of foods, especially most diet and weight loss, low-carb foods such as Medifast, and many others. - Eating too many raw cruciferous vegetables, also known as goitrogens, that interfere with thyroid function or its ability to use iodine (food for your thyroid). It’s okay to eat a small amount of these foods if they are lightly steamed.

- Overconsumption of soy and flaxseed oil (including flax seeds). These oils can act like estrogen and may force the thyroid to make more than usual which eventually wears it out, so it doesn't function as well.

It's best to avoid the foods mentioned above for two weeks. Remember to replace them with the foods your thyroid loves, such as white fish, whey and leafy greens like spinach, and romaine. I can't think of anything harder or more stressful than struggling with food. I've struggled with it my entire life until I learned about the 80/20 rule.
You can live guilt-free. Guilt about eating junk food can actually cause you to gain weight and depress your immune system. By making a plan to "go off" for a meal as an occasional (1–2 times weekly) deviation from your regular schedule, rather than betraying your body, you remove the guilt. Make a plan, if you plan on losing.
I would encourage you to read this article I wrote previously about how to cheat and still lose weight to keep your metabolism in full swing, and how if you don't, it can alter the physiological effect it has on you.
As Kelly Clarkson says in her song: "Think Before You Cheat" so you don't hurt your health or destroy a month's worth of dieting. Most of the time it's not worth it anyway.
