A Fat-Burning Feast For New Year's Eve

The holidays are over and it's New Year's resolution time, and if you're like me, this year's resolution list includes eating healthy.

New Year's Eve is a time to go all out and do something special, but that doesn't mean it needs to be unhealthy. I've got the perfect delicious, good-for-you dinner that your whole family will love.

The best part is, the more you eat the healthier you'll be. Seafood is loaded with iodine that helps boost thyroid function along with tons of other health benefits.

Here's my fat-burning feast for New Year's Eve.....

Servings: 4
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes

(1 pound) Squid (calamari), tubes only
Salt and pepper
Extra virgin olive oil
(1) Lime, cut into wedges
Few sprigs fresh parsley, finely minced
Bamboo skewers, soaked

1. Preheat grill. Wash squid, pat dry with paper towel. Cut squid into 2-inch tubes and thread onto bamboo skewer. Season both sides with salt and pepper. 2. Grill over medium-high heat for 4 minutes each side or until edges slightly charred. 3. Drizzle olive oil over cooked calamari, squeeze lime over and top with parsley.


(1/3 cup) Grated Parmigiano Reggiano
(¼ cup) Fresh lemon juice
(1 small) Garlic clove
(½ tbsp) Dijon mustard
(2) Anchovy fillets
(1 tbsp) Extra virgin olive oil
(5 tbsp) Fat-free Greek yogurt *optional

In the bowl of a food processor add the cheese, the lemon juice, garlic clove, mustard and the anchovies. Turn the machine on and let it run for 15 to 20 seconds. Add the oil and yogurt and let the machine run for another 15 seconds. Makes 3/4 cups. Toss romaine lettuce in a bowl with this creamy Caesar dressing until coated and Mangia!

Servings: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes

Fish Stew

The variations are endless for holidays. I can add ½ pound of shrimp, mussels or clams, scallops, and especially king crab legs to the stew. If you do add shellfish, add them a couple of minutes before the fish. They need more time to cook and open. And add more liquid to accommodate the extra fish. Of course, I add more vegetables.

(6 Tbsp) Olive oil
(1 medium) Onion, chopped (about 1½ cups)
(3 large) Garlic cloves, minced
(3–-4) celery stalks
(2) Carrots cut up into chunks
(1) 14-ounce can of whole or crushed seasoned tomatoes with their juices
(2 tsp) Tomato paste (optional)
(2–3 cups) Clam juice (or substitute chicken broth)
(1) ½ lb fish fillets (use a firm white fish such as halibut, cod, red snapper, or sea bass), cut into 2-inch pieces

Fastest Method: Fast method for an Even quicker version: Saute onions, garlic, and red pepper flakes in olive oil. Add clam juice and marinara sauce as well as celery and carrots. When bubbling, toss in some fish (shellfish first). Simmer a few minutes and voila!

Longer method:.Heat olive oil in a large thick-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté 4 minutes, add the garlic and cook a minute more. Add parsley and stir 2 minutes. Add tomato and tomato paste, and gently cook for 10 minutes or so. Add clam juice, and fish. Bring to a simmer and simmer until the fish is cooked through and easily flakes apart, about 3–5 minutes. Add seasoning. Salt to taste. Ladle into bowls and serve.

'Tis the season of overdoing it, and that usually means we end up getting sick. We seem to be exhausted all the time, and that almost always means we gain weight.

Jump-Start Your Metabolism & Burn Off Excess Calories

Before I get started, I have to make my Lisa Lynn Public Service Announcement: You cannot lose weight and keep it off with exercise alone.....

But be aware, this jumping revs up your heart rate because you're hoisting your body weight up against gravity.

It will work all your major muscles, especially abs, glutes, and quads, to propel you while building your smaller stability muscles (which are worked as you land) that are equally as important but almost always overlooked.

As you can see, a hop box can be a one-stop-shop for reshaping muscles, from head to toe.

You can easily add this to your current workout by doing your strength training moves on the box. This increases the intensity of the moves by simply changing the angles. Making subtle changes in your workout, like changing the angle, require more balance and power. 


  • Set a goal before you begin, such as ten repetitions of each move
  • Do "1-more" of each move than you did last time
  • Keep track of how many of each move you can initially do. Make a note of the extra reps you can do as you progress. This will help motivate you by allowing you to visibly see and feel how much stronger and leaner you're becoming.


Intensity level: 8–9 — Start wherever you are and remember that anything extra you do counts as more. This is an eight on the RPE scale (rate of perceived exertion) out of 10.

Total time: 30 minutes — You can break it down into (3) 10-minute sessions.

You'll need:

  • A timer (the timer on your phone works great)
  • A step-stool, plyo box, or even a sturdy milk crate can work. Beginners should begin at 20-inches height or less. If you're more advanced, you can use 24–30 inches. If you're outside, a park bench is perfect.

How you do it: Before beginning each move, set your time to one minute and perform your first set, working as quickly as possible, using good form and aiming to complete the repetitions in less than the minute allowed. Use any remaining time to recover and rest before continuing. This is all about working smarter, not harder. Then, finish the remaining six sets, or as many as you can.

How often to do it: Perform this workout three times weekly, allowing one day in between. Short on time? Done one move daily for one minute. The goal is seven sets.

Warm up first: For three minutes, do as many rounds as possible of each of the following:

  • 10 squats
  • 10 single leg lunges onto the box (10 on each side)
  • Frog kicks

The Workout Movements

#1: The Burpee Box Hop (I call these "burp-up your last mealies")

  • Stand up in front of the box with your feet hip-width apart to begin
  • Crouch down and place your hands on the box, jump feet back to a plank position and do a full push-up (lower your entire body — thighs and chest — all the way to the floor). Push back up to a plank position and "hop" feet back up towards your hands. Stand back up and hop onto the box.
    (NOTE: Make sure to keep your knees soft and use your arms to swing yourself up onto the box and land with both feet securely on the box)
  • Step down on the other side. That's one!
  • Repeat at least 10 times or for one minute straight

#2: The Incline Box Push-Up

  • Start this move in plank position with your palms on the box. Lower your chest on the box until it touches it, keeping your elbows tight to your side (this way is best for beginners). 
  • Push yourself back up to a plank position. That's one!
  • Perform at 10 times without resting or as many as you can safely perform

#3: Box Step-Up

  • Stand, facing the box with your left foot on top of the box, knee bent, and arms by your side
  • Push off using your right foot as if you're jumping (exploding) onto the box and bring your bent, stable knee up to your chest (as if to give your knee a kiss). 
  • Lower your right leg back to the start position, making sure to land with knees slight bent (soft knees)
  • That's one! Continue on the same side for 4–5 reps and then switch legs, repeating on the other side.
  • Do two sets and rest for the remainder of the minute drill. If you finish early, allow your body and breath to recover.

#4: Tricep Box Dips

  • Sit on the edge of the box, facing away from it, with hands on the edge and fingertips pointing towards the floor.
  • Walk feet forward away from the box until legs are straight (beginners, keep legs bent to make it easier).
  • Keep butt close to the box as you bend your elbows behind you until your arms form a 90° angle
  • Push yourself up, using the box to push off as if you're pushing yourself down until you're back up to the starting position
  • That's one!
  • Do 10 reps and rest for the remainder of the minute

#5: On the Box Frog Kicks

  • Sit on top of the box, close to the edge with legs into the chest
  • Slowly lean your torso back and extend your legs out while making sure to keep your core tight
  • Explode back up to the starting position
  • That's one!
  • Do 25 reps and rest for the remainder of the minute. For beginners, you can secure yourself using your arms placed behind you and allowing yourself to push off using them.

Repeat the five moves above six more times......

You'll burn 250 calories (more if you're a male) in addition to tightening and toning your body.

    • Don't overeat, and take smaller portions of food (remember, your stomach is only the size of a fist)

Fun Fitness Challenge, Just In Time For Halloween!

I was asked by a social media follower recently what I would propose when it comes to ending the health care crisis in America. What would my health care initiative be?

Let's take a closer look at what a health care initiative truly is. A health initiative is any plan or program intended to improve our health care system and organization, based on the principle that superior health care and its systems could build healthier communities.

This is the problem with our country — we either live in denial, or no one wants to be honest about the big issues. We all overeat, and we don’t move enough. We don’t even get up to change the television channel or answer the phone anymore. We tend to overcomplicate things, making them practically impossible to "do the do," if you know what I mean.

I for one get overwhelmed, which incapacitates me and stops me from making the changes needed. My solution to the health care crisis in America is very simple yet highly effective. It works 100 percent of the time when used. I’ve learned to keep it very simple, and that’s exactly why this plan is so effective.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a Pilates Princess or King of CrossFit, our bodies are only as healthy and strong as our weakest issue. Everybody—translation, every person living on this planet, needs to be able to do these things to stay healthy and to try to keep ourselves out of nursing homes. Nursing home care is one of the most expensive health care costs we will face as we begin to live longer. Unlike our politicians, none of us can afford to skip over these facts.

For instance, if you’re not flexible, you will most likely end up getting hurt because of your inflexibility. Alternatively, if you’re like Gumby, but lack adequate strength in all of the right places, you may be slumped over and frail which is a dangerous liability. 

As fitness trainers, the first thing we do is assess what our client’s current fitness levels are, regardless of their goal. This is where most people take the wrong turn when it comes to getting fit. We all want to work on what we are already good at, but that’s not what needs the TLC. It’s the weakness that we need to address to prevent injuries and health issues from popping up and taking us off of our game.

Interestingly, we are all born with these gifts, but we lose these fitness levels over time due to not using or misusing them. That’s why kids love this fit test—because most kids can naturally do all of them. As we age, we lose this ability unless we pay close attention to doing the right things, which is address the most important issues.

Here are the Top Five exercises that everybody should be able to do. They tell the true story about your health and give away your real fitness levels, which determine the state of your health. Believe it or not, your body is naturally designed to do each of these moves. Try them, and let's see just how functionally fit you really are (Caution: Be very careful if you haven’t done these in a while. They aren’t as easy as they look. It may take time to get back into proper physical condition before you’re able to do it, but it’s a good test of how productive your current fitness program is).

  • Bend over and touch your toes. You should be able to place your palms flat on the floor without bending your knees, or at least touch your fingertips to the floor.
    What does this prevent? Bad achy backs and knees and prevents strains and sprains. This move tells you how flexible your hamstrings, hips and low back are, as well as the health of your spine.

  • Sit down on the floor without using hands and get back up without using your hands or crossing your legs. I even struggle with this if I'm not warmed up, but I never stop trying. The lack of being able to get off the toilet is the #1 reason most people end up in nursing homes, and I’m not going there! Are you? This tells us not only how strong you are but also how flexible. It takes both strength and flexibility to be able to do this.
    What does this prevent? Bad back and knees, keeping you fit enough to care for yourself without home health care. Less falls that fracture bones and fewer wheelchairs, canes or walkers.

  • Push yourself up off the floor; aka The Perfect Push Up, while keeping your body straight and stiff.
    What does this prevent? A strong core is the best prevention for bad backs and necks.

  • Sit-up from lying position (this is old school, but you need to do this to get up every day). If your muscles aren’t strong enough you’ll wind up using the wrong muscles, and that’s how you'll hurt yourself. Yes, you really can get hurt sitting up in bed. People hurt their necks all the time doing this. Sad, but true.
    What does this prevent? The sit-up tells you how strong your core is. Having a strong core prevents belly bulge, bad backs, necks, and prevents falls. Not to mention, a strong core looks great.

  • Lying straight leg flexibility test. When you raise your leg it should be straight and at a perfect 90-degree angle (without helping it to get it there—that’s cheating).
    What does this prevent? If you can’t get your leg straight at 90 degrees, it tells how inflexible you really are. This is simple science, and the solution is easy. It doesn’t require you to take up yoga for hours every day. (Try the LynFit Lazy Man's Yoga as shown in The Metabolism Solution)

    *Note: If you can’t do this, and you’re wondering why you ache all the time and your back or hip problems are not being resolved with physical therapy, chiropractic or cortisone just heard your solution. You need to do this simple stretch daily, as often as it takes until you can. If you don’t, your doomed for back, knee and hip troubles, if you don’t have them already.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, as being dehydrated also plays a role in your flexibility (you can't knead dry dough). Remember to warm up a bit beforehand (a warm shower can do this or walk around for a bit until you feel warmed up).

If your aches and pains are past a 2½ on a pain scale of 1–5, you may want to consider taking the following supplements to help ease inflammation. Inflammation is most likely causing your issues to escalate.
