  • Chew mint gum: Always have mint gum in your car, purse and desk to chew on when the urges get rough. Chewing gum does many things—It gives you something to chew when you really aren’t hungry but need to chew on something, and the repetitive motion sends signals to a part of your brain that controls appetite and satiety. If your brain thinks you're eating it will send signals that you're full. Unless, of course, your shut off valve has been damaged and broken (if you've gained more than 10 pounds your shut off valve is broken and damaged and will need to be retrained by sticking to your food plan). In this case, you’ll have to white knuckle it until things get better. The sweet taste also activates the release of the feel-good brain chemical called serotonin. Low serotonin levels cause cravings to pop up in the first place.
  • Stress less: Stress will cause your body to release the stress hormone cortisol, which tells your brain to seek out rewards or pleasure. This is why we always crave the wrong things. Enter fat and sugar loaded comfort foods that blunt cortisol and temporarily stop stress. What you’re really craving is to feel better. Find other ways to stimulate happiness that do not including eating to help curb high-calorie cravings. Take a walk break, even if it’s to go get a cup of green tea, or call a friend until the moment passes. The quick chat will trigger a stress reducing emotional release that food can never fill. When all else fails, I hit pause and pray. I say The Serenity Prayer and place my dog in my lap and wait until the craving passes. After all, I didn't get to be 40 pounds overweight by not overeating!

When it comes to losing weight most of us focus on the big things, but it's the little things that usually keep us from losing weight. Those little things we all do that seem so unimportant that we don’t even write them in our journals.

What you don’t know can hurt your weight loss. In fact, it may even stop you from losing weight; especially if you're female, over 35 years old, diabetic, or have a thyroid condition (all apply). Don't shoot the messenger. I don't make the rules and I certainly still struggle with some of these myself. If you’re not losing weight, listen up, these are for you.

Here are the Top 5 Metabolic Mistakes I see on food journals every day that stop weight loss dead in its tracks:

Metabolic Mistake #1: You Think Juicing Is Good For You

While juicing does supply some nutrients your body doesn't know the difference between sugar that came from juicing or candy. It still elevates blood sugar levels which stop fat loss and slow weight loss.

Do this instead: Drink a Complete Whey Protein Shake. Do this instead: Swap your fruit for green veggies such as celery, or anything green for that matter, and you'll lose weight faster and feel fuller longer. Vegetables don’t cause blood sugar spikes the way fruit does so you'll feel fuller and eat less. Just make sure you're not dipping it into calorie loaded hummus or high calorie dip. Look for zero calorie dips or salad dressings instead if you’re trying to melt belly fat.

Metabolic Mistake #5: You think All Exercise Is Created Equal When It Comes To Losing Weight

While all exercise beats the couch, it's not all great for weight loss. Movement burns calories but exercises like zumba counts as cardiovascular exercise. Yoga which is great for stress relief and stretching and last but not least, Cross Fit, which can be too intense and not only stop weight loss but can cause weight gain unless you're under 30 and live stress free. All exercise is stress to your body but none of these are "the best" when it comes to losing weight and burning excess fat; especially around the hips, butt and thighs.

What You Can Do Right Now To Lose Weight

On my blogs and in my newsletters I post about the most effective ways to lose 1 pound a day, even with a slow/hypothyroid metabolism. I provide delicious recipes and supplement ideas to help you overcome the cravings and lack of energy from time to time that we all struggle with. This year, due to some horrifically cold weather and lots of snow, people seem to be struggling more than ever.

I don't know about you, but I struggle much more when it's cold outside. The only thing I want to do is eat and sleep. That being said, I still want to fit into my clothes when spring finally rolls around. I would like to tell you about 4 things I never stop doing no matter how much I may want to. They keep my metabolism running fast, making it harder to gain weight while making it easier to lose.

  1. Get up and move every day, no excuses. I walk for 60 minutes daily - period. It's the only way I nail the 10,000 steps that our body requires. This weather is the perfect example why I suggest everyone own a treadmill and not rely on getting to a gym or going outside.

  2. Drink my shake after my 60 minute walk. I hate my Protein Shake cold so I make it the night before and keep it in the refrigerator, allowing me more time to sleep in. I use a small milk frother to make it fluffy and delicious. Just like those fattening, expensive beverages that we all like from places like Starbucks. If I crave milk or cream in my coffee I use a little of the pre-made shake in my coffee instead. 

  3. I also struggle with dinner this time of year because I crave comfort food. Slimming salads are not appealing so I reach for chicken soup for my metabolism or a sauteed salad to satisfy my cravings and fill me up.   4. I never stop taking my supplements. If I did, my cravings would win and I would struggle to function or even get out of bed for that matter.     10:00am: My brunch/lunch. (1) LynFit Chocolate Lean Bar with hot tea. Yes, I should have a shake but I have a Lean Bar instead unless I've been really bad with my eating.

    1:00pm: Green apple and small (kid's size) fat free, sugar free yogurt. This is my indulgence.

    If I'm on the road and afraid I'll forget, or I'm struggling with food cravings or low energy/depressed, I'll take the Carb Edge at 10:00am with my brunch/lunch.

    I focus on work, not food, by staying super busy. If I need a mental work break I'll work on my projects or charities.

    3:00pm: Stretch to relieve physical and mental stress while overseeing my kids' homework.

    6:00pm: (2) LynFit Raspberry Ketone Cleanse (3 - if hormones affect my regularity). I'll have a huge serving of Ciambotta on a bed of lettuce or sauteed salad with shrimp or tilapia. Some nights I will skip the protein at dinner to avoid chicken, which slows/stops my weight loss and causes my body to gain weight fast.

    7:30pm: After dinner (yes, I know my meals aren't spaced 3 hours apart - I live in the real world too) I have a small tea cup that I put ¼-½ cup of water in with (1) scoop of Complete Protein Shake. I eat it with a spoon like cake batter that we all love - chunks and all. I love licking the spoon and this satisfies my insatiable sweet tooth. If the weather is nice I'll go walk the dogs instead. This helps me lose the 5 pounds I inevitably gain every winter.

    9:00pm: By 9:00pm I'm fighting to stay awake so I take (1) LynFit Lean Sleep and dive under the covers with my dogs.

I'm all about total transparency and letting you see how human I am. I'm no different than you.     Shop 'Til You Drop The Pounds

    'Tis the season, and if you're like me and I'm guessing you are, that means countless things to do; which includes lots and lots of shopping intervals. All that shopping means that sometimes the exercise goes by the wayside. Not to worry - we're going to "fun out" your workouts so you'll want to do them, not "have" to do them so you can shop 'til you drop those pounds.

    What if I told you that shopping can help you lose just as much weight as going to a boring gym? Yep, it's true. Remember, food is 90% of your weight loss success so as long as you're busy and eating clean you'll still lose weight. In fact, shopping may help distract you from eating as long as you don't make deals with yourself as to why you should and could eat more, and stay away from the food court at the mall. If you do that you'll overpay with poor choices and anything you get at the mall isn't going to be good for your weight loss.

    There are a few simple tricks that anyone can do that will help them get in shape fast and lose 1 pound per day. Better yet, these simple tricks don't require you to join a gym. Your body is always burning calories, even at rest. Even sleeping burns calories. So what if I told you that you can drop 1 pound per day while doing your favorite thing - shopping? Here is the "Shop 'Til You Drop The Pounds" plan you've been waiting for your whole life, and it's the only one of its kind.

    ACTION STEP #1: Reshape, Tighten and Tone Your Upper Body (1:07 in the video above)

    Push yourself out the door doing door jamb pushups. Door jamb pushups help to strengthen your upper body and keep your arms tight and toned for the holiday sleeveless dresses. Door jamb pushups also help correct a slumped-over posture. Perform (1) giant set of as many reps as you can, using good form.

    ACTION STEP #2: Core Walk in the Mall Holding Your Bags in the ½-way Position (1:55 in the video above)

    Core walking builds endurance and strengthens your cardiovascular system. If you hold your shopping bags at the ½-way mark you'll also be tightening and toning your arms. Core walking/Mall walking at a brisk pace of 3.5mph can burn as many calories as a light jog. Wear sneakers shopping, park far away and walk around the mall before it opens for 30-45 minutes and you'll burn calories while beating the crowds. 

    Fit Tip: Wear a pedometer to log steps taken. Aim for 10 thousand steps every day and if needed, get on the treadmill to guarantee it.

    ACTION STEP #3: Standing Rear and Side Kicks to Tighten Your Butt and Strengthen Your Core While Boosting Your Calorie Burn (3:25 in the video above)

    Standing rear and side kicks tighten your butt and build core strength while helping to develop balance. These moves are great for people with bad knees or hips and can also be done standing at the stove. Boost calorie burn when you're standing in line. Long lines equal more time so do a few extra. Aim to do a set of 25 at each store.

    ACTION STEP #4: The Pay at the Register Toe Raise (4:15 in the video above)

    These moves tighten and tone legs and if you keep your core tight you'll get great ab benefits as well which protects your back. Toe raises are a great stretch too. Aim to do a set of 25 at each store.

    ACTION STEP #5: Eat Thermogenically to Force Fat Loss (4:40 in the video above)

    Losing weight is 90% diet and only 10% of your weight loss results come from exercise. Eating on the run doesn't have to be a diet disaster, although if you don't plan ahead it almost always is. If you're serious about losing weight, or at least not gaining weight, you need a solid "go low" plan before you step foot outside of your house. Have a thermogenic Protein Shake before you leave and set your phone alarm for 3 hours so you don't skip meals. Bring a "lean and low" protein bar with you in your purse and a bottle of water so you're not tempted to go near the food court where the smells of the food can take you over.

    What's "low and lean"? Low carb, low fat, but high in clean protein. Most protein bars are nothing more than expensive cookies and most aren't even that healthy.     Not losing weight no matter how hard you try? It could be that it's not even your fault. Why? Because most of what we are taught about weight loss is all wrong - nothing but lies and myths that stop us from losing weight and lead us to nothing but discouragement - "Myth"Conceptions. Learning the truth about weight loss may be just what you need to start losing weight today.

    When you hear something enough, you actually start to believe it. Even if there is a voice inside your head that says otherwise. The biggest tip-off is that you're not losing weight despite the countless hours you're spending killing yourself in the gym. I lost weight immediately (40 pounds) and you can too once these secrets to boost your metabolism are learned. I had to forget everything I had learned previously and begin to do things differently.     Rapid weight loss (rapid results) is always the best way to get people to stick to the program. That doesn't mean you should starve yourself or go on a crash diet however. Those cause nutritional deficiencies that make us cranky. The physical stress it inflicts on our bodies cause our cortisol (aka, fat storing hormone) levels to rise, making that stubborn muffin top even harder to lose.

    90% of weight loss is based on diet and exercise makes up the last 10%. That being said, you cannot exercise away a bad diet. No bargaining. Just because you exercised doesn't mean you get to eat more (unless you're a male under 2 years old). When your diet is dialed in you don't have to live in the gym.

    #4: High Fat, Low Carb Is Good For Weight Loss - WRONG!

    You're not walking around with hairy palms so stop following those "Cave Man" diets. If you are, I'd bet you're gaining weight instead of losing it. To make matters worse, your cholesterol level is probably rising higher that the national deficit!

    While you do need fat in your diet, the kind you consume can make or break your weight loss. Some fats burn easier as fuel compared to others. Bad fats, like trans fats, raise cholesterol and increase your risk of heart disease. Not to mention, they make your pants too tight! The saturated fats found in red meat, butter, cheese and peanut butter won't help you lose that muffin top. But a good fat, like Omega 3 found in salmon, will.

    The best way to take Omega 3 is through supplementation. I always suggest supplements when you're trying to boost your metabolism because you get a metered dose versus a guesstimation. You need to ensure your body gets exactly the amount it needs - no more, no less - in order to burn off body fat. Omega 3's are also great for pain, inflammation and even easing depression.

    #5: All Supplements Are Created Equal - WRONG!

    This is the perfect example of "you get what you pay for". You can't supplement away a bad diet but supplements can help you lose weight faster and easier when you combine them with a thermogenic diet and metabolic exercise. I always tell my clients, "if you don't see results in the first 2 weeks - stop! You most likely won't ever". When you take a quality supplement that's blended and contains the exact amounts your body needs you'll see and feel the results right away. Especially if you're eating correctly and performing metabolic workouts.

    Most inexpensive supplements are inexpensive because they don't have the amounts needed of the active ingredients to provide maximum results. Always buy from a reputable source and know what you're looking for. Or, buy from someone who has already done that for you. I blend all of my supplements so you don't have to pay a supplement scientist. When you buy cheap it's always "buyer beware". Quality is, and will always be, paramount!

    The Gratitude Challenge For Lasting Transformational Change

     

    I just completed my Advanced Level of Coaching with Jack Canfied (co-author, "Chicken Soup for the Soul") at his home in Santa Barbara, CA. During this retreat I noticed a recurring habit that totally changed people's lives - physically, mentally and spiritually. This habit didn't just change lives gradually; rather, it transformed lives overnight. What was that habit that when willingly practiced radically transformed people's lives? Gratitude.

    Gratitude - that quality of willingly being thankful and appreciative for a benefit that you have already received. When it comes to weight loss and fitness we spend so much time hating our bodies. So much so that we often forget just how much we have to be grateful for. Could it be that one of the greatest hindrances to our weight loss is our attitude - our failure to be grateful? I think so.

    "Less than good" attitudes are like flat tires - you won't go very far until you change it. You've all heard the saying, "what you focus on multiplies" - that is absolutely correct. Just think about it. How many times have you woke up on the wrong side of the bed and that negativity carried throughout the entire day? Once you're mired in the mud it's hard to get out.

    I challenge you to change the way you look at things, starting today. Try to see some positive in everything, even bad situations. Do this on a consistent basis and eventually the way you see those things and your beliefs in them will change. What we believe shapes our thinking, which in turn shapes our lives. This is especially true when it comes to our bodies. We often don't see things for what they are but what we perceive them as being. The way we see things is shaped by the way we see ourselves. If you believe you are lovable, you will act in a loving and caring manner toward your body by treating it with respect and feeding it right, exercising it safely and nourishing it; body and mind. 

    When you "love" on yourself you will attract more love your way as well. Friend, spouses, even the dog will show the respect to you that you show. It all starts with you. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you believe you're not worthy and unlovable you'll act accordingly. Yes, including eating clean, pure foods and making sure you get enough daily exercise. You focus on your fear and that fear multiplies into all aspects of your life.

    I never believed I would lose weight so I never really committed to doing what I was supposed to. I used to complain, "it didn't work for me" or I would lie and tell myself I was doing what I was supposed to and it just wasn't working. The truth is nothing changed until I changed from the inside out. It all started with a single thought, a single attitude adjustment from negativity to gratefulness. Now at age 46 I'm in the best shape of my life. I've lost, and kept off, 40 pounds. And I'm stronger, more flexible than ever. My depression is gone and I'm the happiest I've ever been, despite the fact that life's not always perfect. I now experience real joy every day regardless what size my thighs are. The lies we believe about ourselves deceive us. See yourself the way God sees you. In His eyes you are perfect just as you are. This truth will set you free.

    Many of the "love yourself habits" in my Gratitude Challenge will ask you to go outside your comfort zone. Transformations that radically change your life start outside of your comfort zone. I must warn you upfront: These health habits bring on radical change. Do not try these unless you want to get unstuck. 

    I dare you to change your life and start loving yourself today. Remember to complete each one of these on its assigned day, and don't skip ahead. It's important to be a rule-follower and perform each one at its designated time. Keep in mind, outside your comfort zone is where it all begins. By practicing these health habits over the next 21 days you'll be practicing gratitude while establishing new healthy habits that will radically transform your life physically, mentally, and spiritually.     LynFit's 21 Day Gratitude Challenge

    1. Go to bed 1 hour earlier (turn off all lighted technology). Can't sleep? Take (1) LynFit Lean Sleep.
    2. Say it out loud: "I can do this!" - Fake it until you make it. No if's, and's or but's.
    3. No alcohol all weekend. Zero. It feeds belly fat.
    4. Don't cheat this weekend. Stick to the plan.
