Learning From The "Biggest Losers" Who Couldn't Maintain Weight Loss

If you’re like me, and have been overweight in your lifetime, you know all too well what a struggle it is to keep the weight off. Losing the weight is the easy part. Keeping the weight off is a whole new metabolic boosting ball game.

There has been a lot of controversy about the "Biggest Losers" not being able to maintain their weight loss. I’m going to help separate fact from media hype, so this doesn’t happen to you. I'm going to fill you in on what the stories don't say that you need to know if you’re serious about losing weight and keeping it off for good.

Rule #1 is don’t believe everything you read or see on television. For the most part, just about everything you read or see on television is paid for by a sponsor who wants to sell you the alternative methods that are most likely medical procedures you need to keep the weight off.

I’ve struggled and have all the metabolic disadvantages possible; from hypothyroid to being menopausal, combined with the fact that I love food and live to eat (I think I'm the world’s biggest food addict). All this made losing weight and keeping it off difficult, but not impossible. I was depressed and stuck in every area of my life, but I found that when my food is in order, my whole life falls into order.

There are simple all-natural, highly effective and convenient solutions that anyone can do to lose weight, and if they continue, will keep it off. These simple solutions are a lot less expensive than living overweight, not to mention the emotional price.

The toughest part is dealing with denial. Denial will keep you stuck, allowing faulty thinking and fear to kick in, keeping you stuck exactly where you are. Bear in mind that whatever takes the weight off is also what keeps the weight off for good. Whatever weight loss method you choose needs to be sustainable for life.

Don't let that last sentence scare you. I remember hearing that and thinking, "how long do I need to drink these shakes, take these supplements, and eat like this?" A funny thing happened, however; once I reached my goal weight. For the first time in my life I didn’t want to go back to my old ways of eating. I not only surpassed my goal weight (I was 40 pounds heavier) but also felt better emotionally and had more energy, so I got off the couch. What you see today is a by-product of that weight loss.

Below is what you need to know when reading media reports when it comes to exercise and the "Biggest Losers." I have worked closely with a few "Biggest Loser" contestants, and I can tell you firsthand they struggled because they didn’t have a livable, reliable, sustainable lifestyle in place.

DILEMMA: "Biggest Losers" relied mostly on excessive, joint-damaging exercise every day that is not practical in real life.

The "Biggest Loser" contestants worked out for at least five hours daily, allowing them to eat more calories without slowing their metabolism down. In real life when you have family and a full-time job you can’t work out for five hours. Even if you could, it's damaging to your joints and you shouldn’t. Everything is about balance, starting with eating enough of the right foods.

As a weight loss specialist, I specifically suggest metabolic boosting foods to offset your dead metabolism instead of eating whatever you want. Often the foods you insist on eating are the very foods that initially caused you to gain weight. There are also the health halo foods that cause weight gain. For instance, did you know that if you have hypothyroidism, kale can inhibit your thyroid, making it even harder to lose weight? People are adding kale to their diets, juicing excessive amounts, and even adding it to their protein shakes because the media says to do so.

The bottom line is that things aren’t always as they seem. For the "Biggest Losers", it's not that losing weight affected their ability to keep it off. It's more the reality that they could not continue doing the unrealistic steps that the show had them doing to take the weight off.

DILEMMA: "Biggest Losers" ate more calories than most of us can because they were over-exercising.

In a perfect world this would work fine—eat what you want and exercise it off in the gym. In the real world, it’s just not realistic.

I’ve suffered from this issue. As a trainer and bodybuilder, I ate super healthy yet didn’t lose an ounce. Looking in the rearview mirror, I can be honest and say I was an exercise addict, and this will not work when you're trying to lose weight or maintain weight loss. At some point, your joints can’t take the stress from that excessive amount of exercise, so you have to cut back to a normal, more realistic amount. When this happens, it must also be remembered to cut back on the eating as well.

I don’t know about you, but the days I don’t exercise are the days that I tend to eat the worst, making this the perfect set up for weight gain. It’s not the weight loss that was the problem for the "Biggest Losers", it’s faulty thinking that stops them from achieving their sustainable goals and living a leaner lifestyle.

There are five facts you need to know to lose weight (1 pound a day) and keep it off for life.

    • Fact: If you have been, or are overweight, your metabolism is negatively affected and slower.
    • Fact: If you go back to your old ways of eating and drinking you will gain the weight back.
    • Fact: If you are over 40, have diabetes, or are hypothyroid (it’s even worse if you're female), losing weight is harder for you due to your metabolism being slower.
    • Fact: If you can pinch more than an inch of belly fat, losing weight will be difficult for you and will require an aggressive approach vs. the old-fashioned, outdated methods of losing weight slowly.
    • Fact: You can’t starve yourself or exercise the weight away, or rely on surgical procedures such as LAP BAND® or gastric bypass to fix the problem.

The bottom line is you’ve got to set yourself up for lasting weight loss success by living a leaner lifestyle.

There are some foolproof ways that are backed by science that will help keep your metabolism running at an optimal speed, so you lose 1 pound a day and keep it off for life if you continue to do what it takes. Wedding Day Makeover


If done correctly, fast weight loss isn't always a bad thing. The goal should always be to protect your health and feel good. While waiting to the last minute to get started on weight loss for the "big day" isn't the perfect scenario, there are a few aggressive tricks that can make weight loss faster and easier without sacrificing health.

One of the oldest and most successful ways to lose weight is to deplete your glycogen storage, so your body releases stored fluid, making you feel and look less bloated. Five Exercise Moves To Flip The Fat-Burning Switch On

Did you know that you are supposed to empty the glycogen (stored carbohydrates) in your muscles every week? That's why exercise is so important when it comes to losing weight. That's one repetition. Aim to do ten on each leg. You can alternate sides or do all of your repetitions on the same leg.
    2. Tricep Dips: Place your hands at the edge of your chair. Lower your body to the floor. Use your arms to raise yourself back up. Be sure to keep your body close to the seat of the chair and squeeze your arms at the top of the move.
    3. Push-Ups: Lay down face first on the floor and hands next to your chest. Push yourself up until your body is parallel with the floor. Keep your body straight and your core tight.
    4. Plank Crunch: Lie face first on the floor, body straight. Come up on your elbows and toes, using your abs to lift. Hold as long as you can, aiming for one minute.
    5. Side Core Raise: Lying on your side on your elbow, lift your body off the floor using your core. Too hard, use an arm or leg to help at first.

These moves can transform your body in less than 10 minutes and create that leaner look. And, don't wreck your results by drinking the wrong protein shake or juicing. Keep your carbs low to keep losing weight.

The depression became so severe that all she wanted to do was eat and sleep (read Janine's story HERE). She admits that her horrific eating habits were also contributing to rheumatoid arthritis and also rendering the medications ineffective. The demand for more necessary medications continued, so the vicious cycle continued.

Here are some suggestions I gave Janine when her rheumatoid arthritis symptoms came back to haunt her recently. Management, metabolic boosting tips may help you as well if you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or any pain-related illness.

Sometimes food becomes our only comfort when we are in pain. It’s important to stick to your plan now more than ever when symptoms flare up. Food is the problem, not the solution. Stay tight on your thermogenic eating plan available in The Metabolism Solution.  

Fall is full of superfoods that can do more than delight your taste buds. If you’re not careful, however, you might eat foods that cause weight gain that can trigger inflammation, leaving you feeling worse than you did before you ate the so-called superfoods. Here are some seasonal favorites that contain nutrients that may help lessen the pain associated with any type of arthritis. They also help boost metabolism, making weight loss easier. Try to incorporate these foods and nutrients into your diet to ease pain and keep your weight under control. Maintaining a healthy weight helps prevent additional stress on your joints and your mind. That is a critical step when it comes to managing any pain.

For starters, limit pumpkin and winter squashes. While they are healthy superfoods, they also spike blood sugar levels that can trigger a rheumatoid arthritis attack or increase pain. Don’t be fooled by the health halo claims. If you're trying to lose weight the rules are different when managing any pain, especially arthritis.

A is for Awesome Apples. You already know how much I love apples when it comes to boosting metabolism and melting fat. What you might not know is how good they are for pain relief. Apples are always associated with fall, which brings emotional pleasure. That bright, firm apple is also a healthy rheumatoid arthritis snack. Apples are high in fiber, meaning they fill you up and cut hunger, kill cravings and balance blood sugar — that is key. This makes it easier to maintain your weight or even drop a few pounds. One thing most experts agree on is apples are a great fruit, period.

Because of all the different varieties of apples, they are very versatile in terms of how you can cook with them. C is for Curry or Curcumin. Some spices, such as turmeric, are being investigated for potential health benefits. Turmeric is a mild spice that gives Indian curries their characteristic yellow color. In fact, it’s what makes mustard yellow. Curry can be added to fall soups and stews (see the Good for Your Chicken Stew recipe in The Metabolism Solution) to cook healthy foods for rheumatoid arthritis that deliver an anti-inflammatory boost.

Turmeric (Curry) has a mild anti-inflammatory effect. If you’re trying to reduce inflammation, the more ways you can help yourself the better you’ll feel. It's not yet clear how much of the spice is needed to get a measurable effect on rheumatoid arthritis. You need to like it to get enough. That being said, I suggest turmeric from LynFit Recovery Agent instead to ensure your body gets what it needs for pain relief. Using spices is always a healthy way to add flavor and variety to foods when managing pain or your weight. 

Anytime you can use spice for flavor rather than salt, it's a good for metabolic boosting.

G is for Go Nuts. But not all nuts are created equal. While most nuts are an excellent source of heart-healthy unsaturated fats, some nuts, such as walnuts, also contain Omega 3 fatty acids that can fight inflammation. That puts them in the rheumatoid arthritis superfoods category. I like them as a weight loss expert because no one ever overeats on walnuts, but I’ve seen many a woman polish off a bag of pistachios despite the cost. I find it amazing how we never seem to notice the expense of our cheats.

Nuts are also cholesterol-free, making them a healthy snack. Just don't overdo it. Nuts are calorie-dense, so watch your portion size. It's best to stick to a small handful — about an ounce.

K is for Kale. Kale has traditionally been a cool-weather green, although its nutritional powers make it a year-round favorite and celebrity recently, and for good reason. Like other leafy green vegetables, kale is rich in anti-inflammatory antioxidants and vitamins K and C. It's also high in fiber, making it a great rheumatoid arthritis super-food.

Kale can be cooked, eaten raw in a salad, or baked into crispy kale chips for a healthy on-the-go snack. Try my Kale Chips found in The Metabolism Solution. They are not only good for you; they taste great too. Don’t tell your kids it's kale, or that they are good for you, and they will devour them. That worked for me in my house.

S is for Salmon. If you're on my metabolic boosting programs, you know how I feel about salmon. Coldwater fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna, mackerel, and even anchovies, contain inflammation-fighting Omega 3 fatty acids. Try to have (2) or more 3–4 oz. portions each week. Check out the recipes in The Metabolism Solution. Try them over and over, adding your favorite spices until you find a way to enjoy them.

The Power Of Your Posture

Posture PowerDid you know that correcting your posture not only makes you look better, but it also powers up your metabolism? Good posture is not just about appearing to be slimmer; it can help you shed unwanted pounds as well. It takes more effort to maintain good posture, and that is why proper posture burns more calories than slouching. Proper posture also improves respiration, which improves blood flow and revs your metabolism. Now you're burning even more calories.

Anyone can improve posture — anywhere, anytime. Even while you sit at your desk. And you thought you couldn't exercise, making you doomed to gain weight. We need to pay proper attention to our posture, whether we're walking, sitting, or lifting weights.

Posture helps keep our bones straight too. It's a fact of life that as we age our bone mass inevitably decreases. The spine becomes compressed, which is why we lose height. If you're prone to osteoporosis you're much more likely to develop that "hump back look" that is not only unhealthy, it ages us as well.

The simple, slimming, most efficient, posture solutions to maintain strong bones are to stand tall and lift weights. Orthopedists who treat pain are the first to suggest weight lifting as your priority training method. They don't suggest Pilates, yoga, or the fun class at the gym — for good reason. Weight lifting is the #1 way to strengthen your bones. You cannot find a better form of exercise. What comes in second place you ask?

Walking — not running and for good reason. Walking works your whole body. Every time your foot hits the treadmill or pavement it strengthens your bones. Running can be more injurious to your body and tends to cause stress fractures. They are not only painful but counter-productive to what you're trying to accomplish. Here is a little slimming posture power — do this now:

    • Stand up straight with your shoulders pulled back and your stomach pulled in
    • Avoid allowing your head to tilt forward or backward
    • Keep your head stacked on top of your spine (think of a bowling ball on top of a broomstick)
    • Keep your knees slightly bent (if your legs are excessively tight this may affect your posture more than you realize, negatively affecting your entire body and will "show" in your posture by your alignment)
    • Be sure to balance your weight on both feet equally. Doing this barefoot is best as it can help correct some of your foot problems
    • Now, it's all connected. Can you feel the difference?
